The Nguzo Saba: The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa
January 19, 2024The history and origins of Kwanzaa covers a broad expanse of time and space. It is grounded in African harvest celebrations that began at the dawn of advanced human civilizations as we developed more effective ways to grow food, feed ourselves, and thrive. Kwanzaa emerged from its grounding in ancient African history to come into existence during the 1960’s Black Freedom Movement as Black Americans sought to restore our connections to the best of African culture and history.
This connection between ancient African history and the modern African American experience are the roots of Kwanzaa that serve as a foundation and source for its growth and expansion into many branches.
Kwanzaa is comprised of several fundamental components that include basic activities and rituals that remind us of its focus on restoring our cultural connections and enhancing the bonds between us. In practice, the continental African roots of Kwanzaa include –
- First fruit celebrations practiced throughout African cultures and history
- Ingathering of the people and a general celebration of being together
- Reverence and deep appreciation for life, the universe we live, and our Creator
- Gratitude and commemoration of our past and our ancestors who brought us into being
- Annual and ongoing recommitment to our best cultural aspirations, values, and our highest ideals, and
- Celebration of the good of the world and the joys of our time on Earth with those we love
The spirit of righteous struggle from the 1960’s contributed to Kwanzaa being created as a bold act of self-determination and cultural revolution designed to inspire Black people throughout America and the world –
- To reaffirm and restore our connection to African culture
- To reinforce the bonds between us in our families, communities, and worldwide
- To introduce and promote the Nguzo Saba / the Seven Principles as a daily set of values and practices to inform, guide, and promote our collective best interests
- The embrace of Kwanzaa and its practices and principles reflects a self-conscious understanding of the benefits of reclaiming our African cultural identity and its related best teachings.
